SketchUp makes me a hero

SketchUp is so cool.

I went to the dentist today and had two cavities drilled and filled. My mouth still wasn't working right and I was feeling a little woozy. So, when everyone at work starts gathering around to discuss how to set up our outer office for the new people who are coming, I wanted no part of it. Everyone had ideas, some people knew things others didn't, the space was tight, personal issues were just below the surface, and I didn't have the energy.

I think best when I have some time and some room to think creatively. That wasn't the situation there. When I was asked to help, I didn't have a solution.

I knew it would cost in relationships if we kept on going like we were. I told everyone to let this go for a while and that I'd have some ideas later. I borrowed a tape measure and started measuring the room and the furniture. In about an hour, I had a simple SketchUp model of the space and the furniture that needed to go in it. I kept it simple, mostly rectangles which were the right size and about the right color. I also grabbed a couple of things (chairs, a water cooler and a photo copier) off of Google's 3D warehouse.

I arranged the space a couple of different ways, then I spent time with a few members of the group arranging and rearranging the space in SketchUp. Everyone was blown away that I was able to recreate the office in SU and add some convincing details in less than an hour.

One thing which was very helpful was adding three foot circles here and there to show that their was sufficient space for wheelchairs etc.

I cleaned it up a little more and sent the pictures above to our boss's office for final approval. Here I've also added my office (which I had modeled earlier to figure out a way to keep from having my back to the door).
